The essay sketches the role of the square in urban and national life in the 19th and 20th centuries In relation to the turbulent social and political developments in Bohemia and Central Europe. lt is also dedicated to the urban, architectural and artistic changes of the square, which were often closely connected with urban and national politics. After the political upheaval in 1989, the square became the scene of many actions of all kinds and the object of entrepreneurial, commercial interests.
