Beitrag (Sammelwerk) Social-spatial and social change due to immigration.(2021)Immigration and the diversification of urban society are as characteristic of small towns as they are of medium-sized towns and cities. In 2017 almost 20 million people (24%) in Germany had migration backgrounds, in small towns with up to 20,000 in- habitants they accounted for 18% of the population. This article is primarily based on the results of the project ‘Diversity in the centres of small and medium-sized towns – social-spatial integration, urban identity and societal participation’ (Vielfalt in den Zentren von Klein- und Mittelstädten – sozialräumliche Integration, städtische Identität und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe) by the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Deutsches Institut für Urbanistik, Difu). The project examined one small town (Michelstadt) and three relatively small medium-sized towns (Germersheim, Mühlacker and Zittau). The registers of residents in these towns were evaluated in terms of the socio-structural characteristics and socio-spatial distribution of the immigrant population. Due to their industrial economic structure the municipalities have a comparatively high proportion of immigrant residents, although the West and East German towns differ in terms of the proportion and origin of migrant groups. Immigrants are particularly concentrated in the town centres although no homogenous ethnic neighbourhoods were found.
