Real-world laboratories in sustainability research are considered as important approaches to initiate transformation processes and at the same time capture their effects in practice. Also in the field of urban research this research format has become important, whereat the approaches are partial very different. Based on the accompanying research of the flagship initiative City of the Future of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) this article highlights, how real-world laboratories in current transdisciplinary research are conceptualized, where are the challenges of the research approach and where there is an additional value. It becomes clear that real-world laboratories are suitable for urban research as well as for municipal practice to enable a different access to their issues. At the same time it is a mode of research full of prerequisites, where can built on experiences from transdisciplinary research. But it also becomes clear that with regard to intended effects of real-world laboratories there are further research needs.
